What to consider and test when buying a new mattress

You may want to print this list by clicking on the sign below and take it with you on your next visit to a JYSK store.

  • Size: The mattress should be at least 10 cm longer than you and as wide as possible.
  • Is the mattress for you and your partner?
If yes, then you both should test it.
  • Do you suffer from allergies? If so, a foam mattress may be the best choice for you.
  • Moisture: We perspire throughout the night. To help protect your mattress a top mattress or mattress pad can help.
  • Do you often have your children in the bed?
If so, it is a good idea to opt for a wide mattress.
  • Do you read in bed? If so, an adjustable bed may be a good solution for you.
  • Test the firmness of the mattress: Remove your coat and shoes and give yourself plenty of time. Lie in the same position that you would at home.
  • Lie on your back: Is your lower back supported? Mattresses must follow the back's natural contours. If you feel an empty space beneath your back, then this mattress is too firm.
  • Lie on your side: Do your shoulders and hips sink into the mattress? Your waist should be supported so that your spine remains horizontal.
  • Turn over: Is it easy to turn over? If not, this mattress is too soft.

  • Spring mattresses

A spring mattress can lie on slats in a bed frame, on a divan base or in an adjustable bed. Spring mattresses consist of different types of springs and can be turned over to help extend their lifetime.

    Advantages of spring mattresses

    • Durable, because spring mattresses can be turned over.
    • Many spring mattresses can also be used in adjustable beds.
  • Divan sets

A Divan set consists of a spring mattress on top of a wooden frame, you can also place the mattress on any of our bed frames. The base is solid, which means that the mattresses can’t be bent or twisted.

    Advantages of divan set mattresses

    • Springs follow the body's contours to provide better comfort
  • Top mattresses

The top mattress effectively protects the main mattress and can often be washed.

    Advantages of top mattresses

    • Can compensate for a mattress that is either too hard or too soft.
    • Protects the mattress underneath from excess moisture and wear.
    • Increases the durability of the mattress underneath.
  • Foam mattresses

A foam mattress is constructed of a solid or layered foam section and can be placed on a slatted base in a bed frame or on an adjustable bed: it can be turned over.

    Advantages of foam mattresses

    • Good against allergies, resistant to excess moisture and do not collect dust.
    • Foam is very comfortable and durable.
    • Suitable for all age groups and purposes - well suited for adjustable beds

Maintaining your mattress

Follow these simple tips to get the most out of your mattress.

  • Spring mattresses and top mattresses should be turned over 3-4 times a year.
  • Regularly vacuum all mattress types. This should be done for hygiene purposes, but also due to dust and debris that can get into the structure of the mattress.
  • Spring mattresses should rest on a slatted base in a bed frame to ensure that condensation can escape. Follow washing instructions closely when washing removable mattress covers. This is important for top mattresses.
  • Use a mattress pad and/or sheet to protect your mattress.

10 tips for a better night's sleep

Most people experience insomnia from time to time. When this happens, it is important to find the cause and do something about it.

Here are our top ten tips to help you get
a better night's sleep:

  • A quality bed. Purchase a good bed and ensure that your mattress and bed suit your height and weight
  • Regularity. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day so that your body can get into a routine.
  • Only for sleeping and relaxing. Use your bedroom only for sleeping and relaxing so that you associate this space with these activities.
  • Darkness. Ensure that you have curtains that keep the light out. We do not sleep well if there is too much light and this can interrupt your routine.
  • Correct temperature. Try to maintain the correct temperature in your bedroom. You sleep better if the room is slightly cooler.
  • A good sleeping environment. Tidy your bedroom - your room should be relaxing and not stressful.
  • Clear your mind. After a stressful day of thinking, thoughts may bounce around your head and keep you awake.
  • Avoid caffeine. Caffeine and large meals before bedtime can stop you falling asleep and reduce the quality of your sleep.
  • Avoid hunger. Do not go to bed hungry, either. Having a light snack or a glass of warm milk.
  • Exercise. Be sure to exercise at some point during the day, but remain calm before bedtime - otherwise, it may be difficult to fall asleep.
