Tips
for maintaining your duvet and pillow
Our selection of duvets and pillows is extensive and caters for most
people's needs. Depending on the model, we offer an extended guarantee of between 3 and 10 years on
most duvets. For instance, if the ticking, which is the fabric surrounding the duvet or pillow filling,
becomes loose, all you have to do is take the duvet or cushion to your local JYSK store and we will
find a solution. Below are some simple tips for keeping your duvet and pillow in tip-top condition for
many years:
- Duvets and pillows should be shaken every day to retain the shape of the filling and resilience of the down or feathers.
- Avoid vacuuming or beating the duvet as this may damage the down or feathers. If the duvet is machine washable, follow the instructions carefully and make sure it is completely dry before using it again.
- The bedroom should be aired properly each day and a bedspread should not be placed over the duvet until a couple of hours afterwards. This allows moisture to evaporate and keeps the duvet airy and fresh.
| |
 |
- If
you place a bedspread over the bed, the duvet or pillow may be compressed slightly due to moisture filling
the air holes. To get the down or feathers to stand up again, you can tumble-dry the duvet or pillow
for a couple of hours, possibly with a tennis ball or rubber shoe in the machine to make sure the down
or feathers get thrown around properly. It's a good idea to take the duvet and pillow out of the dryer
every fifteen minutes and give them a shake.
The
difference between down and feathers
 | | Down Down comes from aquatic birds like ducks and geese. Down primarily functions as an insulator and that's why it is found on the bird's body. Down feathers are almost three-dimensional and have many hooked and airy strands which can both absorb moisture and keep the body warm.
|
 | | Feathers Feathers are created from horn and have evolved from the scale found on reptiles. They are two-dimensional and sit on the outside of the down in order to protect it against impact. Feathers curve and that's why they are ideal for supporting the neck in pillows as under pressure the feathers will try to return to their natural form.
|
- Down
and feathers are particularly good at insulating the body as they can trap still air, which the body
then warms up. Their greatest advantage, however, is that they absorb moisture and transport it away
from the body, something which synthetic fibres cannot do.
- The best down and feathers have a very long lifetime and even if you use and
wash your duvet or pillow, only minimal maintenance is required to retain these properties.
- The most important prerequisite for good down is that it should come from
adult ducks or geese. Some people believe that the best down comes from live ducks and geese,
but this is a view that JYSK does not share. We consider the plucking of live birds to be cruel and
we do not use that sort of down at JYSK.
- When buying a down duvet or pillow, you should look at the tog rating as this
tells you a lot about the insulation values of the duvet. The tog rating tells you how much air is in
the filling. Down with a high tog rating gives a light and plump duvet, providing the best insulation.
The more feathers there are mixed in with the down, the lower the tog rating achieved and the heavier
the filling. This is why the weight alone doesn't tell you how warm the duvet is. For example, a duvet
with a 500 g filling with a tog rating of 11 is warmer than a duvet with a 1200 g filling with a tog
rating of 4.
Synthetic fibres
The filling in fibre duvets can be made from various materials, such
as polyester, which each have a number of characteristics and benefits. The fibres' insulation abilities
depend on their ability to trap still air which is heated up by the body.
- Hollow fibres
Making the fibres hollow achieves a certain level of insulation as the fibres contain still air.
- Silicone fibres
By adding a thin layer of silicone to the fibres, a softer effect is achieved. These types of fibres tend to be used in duvets and allow them to mould to the body and provide insulation.
| |
 |
- Ball fibres
Fibres rolled
into small balls provide good support for the neck etc. and tend to be used in pillows. Pillows with
ball fibres are easy to shake so you can maintain their original shape.
- Microfibres
By blowing very small fibres
into the duvet or pillow you get a "down-like" effect. These fibres are finer and softer than
other fibres and are also known as blown fibres.
A
fibre-filled duvet or pillow is machine washable and suitable for tumble drying as long as you follow
the instructions. In order to achieve the best results, make sure that the drum of the tumble dryer
is large enough for the duvet or pillow to be able to move around freely.
Allergies and house dust mites
- House dust mites, damp and bacteria in homes are just some of
the reasons why people can sometimes suffer from lung infections such as asthma, allergies and ear,
nose and throat infections.
- As far as house dust mites are concerned, beds provide them with their best
breeding grounds as they absorb moisture and eat dead skin cells. The mites' microscopic excrement contains
an enzyme that causes allergic reactions in some people.
- It is very difficult to avoid having house dust mites in your home. But you
can restrict their numbers and their ability to reproduce by, for instance, washing your duvet, pillows
and any top mattresses around 5 or 6 times a year. This deteriorates their living conditions but even
the best duvets and pillows cannot cope with such regular laundering over a long period of time.
At
JYSK you can buy duvets and pillows with different hypoallergenic labels:

| |
Greenfirst Is a natural essence extracted from lavender, citrus and eucalyptus. If the ticking has been treated with this essence, house dust mites won't thrive in your duvet or pillow. | |
 | | Nomite Is a guarantee that house dust mites and their microscopic excrement will not be able to penetrate the ticking (the fabric surrounding the filling in a duvet or pillow).
| |
 | | Allerban Are antibacterial fibres which prevent house dust mites and bacteria from reproducing. Extra long molecules are attached to the fibres' molecules and these act a bit like barbed wire and destroy the cells in the house dust mites and bacteria. | |
